signs you need dental crowns

A crown is an excellent restorative option for a compromised tooth, protecting its structure and root integrity. The crown fits entirely over your remaining tooth structure to cover and protect it with a restoration designed to closely mimic your tooth's shape, structure, and shade. A porcelain crown is customized to complement the aesthetics of your smile while providing durability, while a metal crown, such as gold, takes the brunt of your chewing force on a molar and protects your natural tooth.

What Are the Telltale Signs That You Might Need a Crown?

A crown is generally reserved for restoring an entire tooth. Some signs and symptoms might be:

  • A large filling is lost, broken or breaking down
  • Temperature sensitivity that indicates tooth decay
  • Tooth discoloration or darkening

When Do We Recommend a Dental Crown?

Dr. Waters may recommend a crown in these situations:

  • Restore a severely decayed tooth
  • Cover a tooth with cosmetic imperfections
  • Rebuild a tooth that's had root canal treatment
  • Replace a large broken or lost filling
  • Repair a cracked or fractured tooth

Getting Dental Crowns in Anderson, SC

The process for getting a dental crown at Waters Family Dentistry is relatively straightforward and takes two visits.

At your first visit, Dr. Waters prepares your tooth, takes impressions of it, and fabricates a temporary crown for you to wear. You'll wear your temporary crown while a dental lab creates your new tooth from the impressions and our dentist's specifications. The process takes approximately two weeks, after which you'll return to our Anderson dental office to have your new crown permanently placed.

Dr. Waters will adjust your crown to ensure proper bite function, and then you're off to enjoy your newly restored smile!
